Benefits of getting a few minutes of morning sunshine

Updated: Apr 9

I talk a lot about how I like to get out first thing in the morning for exercise, and that definitely includes walking at the very least. Having a dog helps take care of some of that desire (when he actually walks more than a few driveways away!). But I always feel so much better when I take the time to go back out for a walk or run at my own pace. No matter what else I have in store for workouts or classes later in the day, whether I get this time often affects my mood, at least in some way.

Maybe this little tidbit is part of the reason:

Getting a few minutes of sunshine in the morning isn’t just about breathing in fresh air — it can actually help you sleep better at night!

Here’s why:

  • It helps regulate your circadian clock — which controls your body’s sleep-wake cycle.

  • People who get a few minutes of sun in the morning tend to burn more body fat and have a leaner physique than those who get their sunshine later in the day.

  • Morning sunlight helps your body release cortisol early in the day — which boosts your metabolism, ability to focus, and immune system.

TIP: Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman recommends getting outside for 5-10 minutes on sunny mornings or 15-20 minutes on cloudy mornings.

So if you aren't usually a "morning sun" person, perhaps it's time to rethink that. And let me tell you from experience, combining that time with some morning exercise has a lot more benefits than the 3 listed above!

It doesn't have to be every minute of your exercise for the day, but just a short morning walk can make a big difference.

I was in need of new notebooks for goal writing (see the Rise & Prime guide!) and content planning (I do a lot of this via digital means, too...but I LOVE a good piece of paper and COLORFUL pens!). I found this very reasonable little one on Amazon.
